I am pleased to present The Widget Company (Widget-Co) 2018/19 Annual Report. This document highlights our achievements over the past year. It provides data and information that show our company’s progress toward the ambitious goals in our Strategic Plan, 2015-2020. We continue to evaluate against measurable targets to assess our performance and identify new priorities. This strengthens our company’s position as the premier widget manufacturer in Canada and our vision to be the best in the world.
In 2018–2019, we achieved significant milestones that reflect the remarkable work environment, innovative research, and premium retail sales at Widget-Co. We sold a record number of W-X25 widgets, pushing our overall revenue past the billion-dollar mark for the first time. To continue our progress, we launched a new, faster and longer lasting widget, the W-100. Released on March 1st, we have already seen a new trend in sales away from the W-X25 and towards the W-100 as customers embrace the new technology.
Over the year our innovative and leading research attracted record industry support. At the same time, our research and development team won an Ernest C. Manning Innovation Award for the W-100, the first time it has been award to a widget manufacturer.
In terms of international trade, the low Canadian dollar has become our biggest challenge. While the low dollar has boosted exports of the W-100 to the United States, the cost of importing key widget materials continues to be a burden. I am hopeful that the Canadian dollar will soon be on the rise. With the increase in use of widgets world-wide, I am confident that our products will stand the test of these trying fiscal times.
We are about to embark on the new Strategic Plan, titled One Hundred Strong. The new plan builds upon the work of the last 100 years in business, while driving us towards the future of widget manufacturing. This coming year, ground will be broken for the new Whitby robotics plant where widget production will be safer, cleaner and faster.
